The coffees in this section are distinctive not only for their quality, but also for helping to address environmental issues and concerns of economic equity. The farms from which these coffees originate are specifically certified by the responsible agencies. All varieties listed here are organic. Organic describes the agricultural practices used to grow coffee. No synthetic chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers may be used in organic practices, either on the farm or in the handling and processing roasting and packaging of the beans. Fair Trade is a consumer-driven movement and market-based approach to improve the quality of lives of farmers in developing countries who produce commodities sold in the developed world. Unlike charity, Fair Trade helps farmers help themselves. The Fair Trade Certification system of third-party monitoring guarantees farmers direct trade and a set fair price, no matter how low world market prices go. Fair Trade benefits to farmers include better housing, education, and healthcare for themselves and their families, and investments in sustainable farming practices and quality. |
